Upload User Data to Route for PLAE and Reporting

Upload and add custom datasets to use in your PLAE and reporting on your routes.

User Data

You can upload your own custom datasets to use in driving your system-generated route and in your route reporting. This feature enhances Route's functionality by enabling users to incorporate not just Pivvot data but also their own unique or project-specific data into their routing decisions. To include your own user data, first, you will upload your data in the Publish application, configure it in the Route application, then add it to your reports or custom PLAEs.

Below are some things to consider when uploading user data:

  • Data must be stored in a zipped ESRI File Geodatabase or Shapefile.
  • Data size is limited to 50MB.
  • Features containing invalid geometry should be repaired or removed before upload. This includes, for example:
    • multi-part features must be exploded (separated into individual records)
    • densify true arcs
    • remove null geometry

Upload Data in Publish

To upload your data to use in Route, you first have to navigate to the Publish application.

If you do not see the Publish application listed, reach out to your account admin for access.

Once inside of Publish, click on the dataset console.

Use the Add new dataset icon to open the creating dataset screen.

Upload a zipped file geodatabase or Shapefile. Note that the file should be an Esri file geodatabases created with ArcGIS 10.0 or above and 50mb or less in size.

In the Create screen, select the feature class you want to configure. You can optionally change the dataset name (i.e. you can choose a project name, type of project, ect) and add a prefix or suffix to organize your datasets.

Click Create to create the dataset. You can monitor the progress of the dataset creation in the dataset console. Once it is created, you will see a green check mark, and the dataset is ready to be configured for Route.

Configure Data in Route

In the Route application, select the Datasets icon to configure your data for routing.

Search for and select the dataset you want to configure..

Click the edit icon to configure the dataset for Route so that it may be applied to the routing algorithm and project reporting.

Select the desired values from the available settings: Feature Type field (required), Cost Field (optional), and Buffer Field (optional).

Feature Type Field The field selected here will be used to determine Sub-Types when configuring the PLAE algorithm that drives the routing process (Prefer, Low-Avoidance, Avoid, Exclude).
Cost Field

Optional. This field relates to the values in the PLAE. Normally, this is set up on the PLAE page, by using the sliders to select a P, L, A, or E value. However, this can be configured before uploading User Data, by creating a field named Cost (text) and pre-assigning a 'P', 'L', 'A', or 'E' value to each record.

If the uploaded data contains a field for Cost where 'P', 'L', 'A', or 'E' values have been populated, select 'Cost' here. If left blank, the Cost will be assigned manually on the PLAE page.

Buffer Field

Optional. Buffer refers to a numerical value (in feet) assigned to each feature. The larger the buffer value, the more a route is going to be pushed away from a feature. Normally, these values are defined on the PLAE page. However, this can be configured before uploading User Data, by creating a field named Buffer (integer), and filling in a value for each record.

If the uploaded data contains a field for Buffer and values have been populated with numeric values in feet, select 'Buffer' here. If left blank, the Buffer will be manually assigned on the PLAE page.

Once configured, click save and the system will process the dataset for use in Route. Monitor the progress of this processing in the Dataset Console. When the dataset is ready to be used in your route reporting and PLAE, a green check will appear in the status column.

A Route symbol will appear next to your datasets that have been configured for use in Route.

Add to PLAE

Your custom dataset can now be added to your PLAE. Navigate to the PLAE console  ,click the plus signto add a new PLAE or edit to add to an existing PLAE, and add your uploaded dataset.

In the Configuration menu, toggle the dataset on to include in the PLAE and set your preference level.

Add the updated or new PLAE to your project routes by following the imprinting steps

Add to a Route Project for Reporting

You can also add your custom dataset to your reports and data package. Open the project configuration screen by clicking on the cogwheel icon next to your project's name in the project list.

Your custom dataset will be listed in the Available Reporting Datasets column. Select the dataset and move to the Selected Datasets Column. Click Save to update the project settings.

Your Route reporting will now include this dataset.
