Maps can display large amounts of geographic data in layers. The way you display your layers helps to describe and identify features, but sometimes you need more than just a particular symbol or color to communicate what you want to say with your layer. This is where labeling features in the map can help. Labels are short pieces of text that describe features in a layer and help your audience understand the features they see.
For example, street names in Google Maps are a Map Label. The text for a label is derived from values in a column of the parent dataset.
You can configure labels for existing layers or when you are creating a new layer.
To access the Labels configuration
- Select the Layer Console icon on the left sidebar within Publish.
- Search and locate the layer in the list.
- Right-click the layer > Edit Layer OR click on the layer > select Edit Layer icon at the top right.
- Select the Label tab.
If you are creating a new layer, please proceed to the Label tab (To add a label to your layer) step once you have completed the Setup step.
To add a label to your layer
- Select on Click here to add map label.
- Under Label Fields, select the column you want to use for labeling or select text to enter your own label.
- Columns containing numerical values will include an option to select Precision. Precision dictates the number of decimal places to display.
- Choose Min and Max Display zoom levels. (see Style a Layer for description on min and max display zoom levels.)
The Display zoom level determine what zoom level the labels will appear on the map.
