Add Exclusion Areas to your Route AOI

You have the option to add any polygon to your AOI to exclude it from the generated route AOI. Route allows you to draw these or upload them as KMZ/KML files.

Exclusion Areas

Exclusion Areas allow a user to identify specific geographic areas within the project AOI that must be avoided by the routing tool. These areas will be avoided completely by the routing process. Some use cases that you may consider using exclusions for might be a cultural feature that you have knowledge of, an area of high population density, or a difficult area to route through for any reason. This is highly customizable and will override the settings you have in your PLAE.  See Configure the PLAE.

  • Exclusion Areas are not required.
  • There is no limit to the number of Exclusion Areas that can be added to a project.
  • The work completed on this page can always be reconfigured - Exclusion Areas can be edited, deleted, or added at a later time.

Add your Exclusion Areas

To draw your exclusion area, select the polygon icon to activate the drawing tool, then draw your exclusion area.. Repeat this process to draw additional areas, if desired.

To upload your exclusion areas, select the upload icon to navigate to the desired file. Polygons must be stored in a KML/KMZ or a zipped Shapefile.

Edit Exclusion Areas

You can change the name of the exclusion area by double-clicking on the name and typing in a new name. Click the label icon for the exclusion area's label to appear on the map.

Edit your exclusion area shape. Select the edit icon, move the vertices as needed, click the edit icon again to turn the editing tool off and save your updated exclusion area.

Exclusion Area View in the Layers Panel

Your exclusion areas will appear in the project layers group on the layer panel on the right of the screen. Toggle exclusion areas off and on as needed.
